Choosing the Right Cruise Cabin: Does Cabin Type and Location Really Matter?
One of the most common questions I receive from clients planning their first cruise is:
"Does it really matter which cabin I choose?"
The short answer is yes.
Your cabin will be your home for the duration of your holiday, and the type and location you choose can have a significant impact on both your comfort and your enjoyment onboard.
While some guests spend very little time in their cabin, others see it as an important retreat where they can relax, unwind and enjoy some quiet time between activities and excursions.
So, what are the main cabin types, and does cabin location really matter?
Interior Cabins
Interior cabins are located within the ship and do not have a window or balcony.
Pros:
Usually the most affordable option.
Ideal for guests who plan to spend most of their time exploring the ship or ashore.
Often exceptionally dark, which many guests find helps them sleep well.
Cons:
No natural light.
Can feel smaller or more enclosed for some travellers.
No private outdoor space.
Interior cabins can represent excellent value, particularly on port-intensive itineraries where you'll spend little time in your room.
Ocean View Cabins
Ocean view cabins include a window or porthole, allowing natural light into the room.
Pros:
Natural daylight and sea views.
Often more spacious than interior cabins.
Usually only a modest increase in price compared with interior cabins.
Cons:
Windows cannot usually be opened.
No private balcony.
For many first-time cruisers, ocean view cabins offer a good balance between price and comfort.
Balcony Cabins
Balcony cabins remain the most popular choice for many guests.
Having your own private outdoor space allows you to enjoy morning coffee overlooking the ocean, watch sail-aways from port or simply relax in peace.
Pros:
Private outdoor space.
Fresh air and uninterrupted sea views.
Greater sense of space.
Particularly enjoyable on scenic itineraries such as Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords.
Cons:
Higher cost.
You may not use the balcony as much as expected, particularly on busy itineraries.
For many experienced cruisers, once they've had a balcony cabin, they rarely want to go back.
Suites
Suites offer the highest level of accommodation onboard.
Depending on the cruise line, suite guests may also receive additional benefits such as butler service, priority embarkation, dedicated restaurants, concierge services and exclusive lounges or sun decks.
Pros:
Significantly more living space.
Premium amenities and services.
Enhanced onboard experience.
Cons:
Substantially higher cost.
For special celebrations or longer voyages, many guests find the additional comfort worthwhile.
Does Cabin Location Matter?
Absolutely.
The location of your cabin can influence noise levels, convenience and even how much movement you feel at sea.
Midship Cabins
Cabins located midship and on lower decks generally experience the least movement.
These are often recommended for first-time cruisers or anyone concerned about seasickness.
Forward Cabins
Cabins towards the front of the ship can offer fantastic views but may experience more movement, particularly in rough seas.
Aft Cabins
Cabins at the rear of the ship are often highly sought after, especially those with larger balconies and wake views.
However, some may experience vibration or noise depending on the ship design.
Consider What's Above and Below
One of the most overlooked aspects of cabin selection is what sits directly above or below your cabin.
A cabin located underneath the pool deck, buffet area or theatre may experience more noise, particularly early in the morning or late at night.
Whenever possible, I recommend choosing a cabin with passenger accommodation both above and below.
So, Which Cabin Is Best?
As with cruise lines themselves, there is no universally "best" cabin.
The right choice depends on your budget, itinerary, travel style and personal preferences.
A guest taking a Mediterranean cruise packed with shore excursions may be perfectly happy with an interior cabin. Someone sailing through Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords may place far greater value on having a balcony.
The key is understanding how you like to travel and selecting a cabin that complements your holiday experience.
Choosing the right cabin can make a good cruise even better.
Talk to us if you are planning a cruise so we can help you find the best option for you.

So today I wanted to share more of the lovely (and inventive π) bag shots sent to me by the customers who have just returned from island hopping in Skiathos and Skopelos in Greece. This is a particularly popular island hopping combination and can also be bolted onto Alonossis if you have a slightly longer stay. We would recommend at least 3 or 4 days in each location. The regular ferry schedule running between these islands makes it an easy and pleasant way to visit several locations in one holiday. You cannot fly to Skopelos or Alonossis so you need to start your trip with a flight to Skiathos.
Our customers stayed in Skiathos Town which has a lovely authentic Greek feel and vibrant set of tavernas and eating locations. There is plenty to do and see on the island - our customers did a bit of local wine tasting for example.
Skopelos is famous for being the location for much of the Mamma Mia film and sums up what most of us think about when we think about Greek islands. And as there is no airport and therefore less direct access, it still feels not too busy and over run with tourism. It is also known as the βisland of churchesβ as there are supposed to be over 360 across the small island.
As these locations are popular, it is an itinerary which you should book in advance where possible to get the best selection of hotels for your trip. Get in contact if this takes your fancy!
