Girls' Weekend in Porto – The Perfect European City Break!
Some friendships stand the test of time, and some traditions are just too good to break!
Every year since leaving university back in 1996 (yes, really!), my university friends and I have arranged an annual get-together for a weekend away. In the early days, these tended to be spa breaks closer to home in the UK, but over the years we've graduated to exploring some of Europe's wonderful cities.
This year's destination? Porto, Portugal – and what a fantastic choice it was!
If you're looking for a European city break with beautiful scenery, fascinating history, fabulous food, great wine and plenty of places to relax and catch up with friends, Porto ticks all the boxes.
A city with history, character and plenty of charm
Porto is built on both sides of the beautiful Douro River and is famous for its six bridges (with a seventh currently under construction!). The most iconic is the Dom Luís I Bridge, which connects the historic centre of Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank.
Both sides of the river have their own distinct character, so there's plenty to explore.
On the Gaia side, you'll find the famous port wine houses, where you can book tours and tastings to discover more about the city's most celebrated export. There are also some wonderful bars and restaurants lining the riverfront, making it the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely lunch or evening drink while taking in the views across to Porto.
We stayed at the Rebello Hotel, on the Gaia side, which was a fantastic base for our weekend. Its rooftop bar provided a wonderful vantage point overlooking the river and the historic city beyond.
Cross over to Porto's old town and you'll find yourself wandering through a maze of cobbled streets, beautiful tiled buildings, ornate churches, palaces, impressive town halls and historic monuments. There's something interesting around practically every corner.
One of the highlights was discovering the city's food markets, where you can graze on delicious local produce, enjoy a drink and soak up the atmosphere.
And don't miss São Bento railway station! Even if you're not catching a train, it's worth popping inside to admire the magnificent hand-painted blue and white tiles covering the walls of its main entrance hall, depicting scenes from Portuguese history.
Coffee, custard tarts and people watching
One of the things I loved most about Porto was its relaxed atmosphere.
There are street performers around almost every corner, and it's a wonderful city for simply finding a pavement café, ordering a coffee and a traditional Portuguese pastel de nata (delicious little custard tart) and watching the world go by.
Be warned, though – Porto is built into some pretty steep hillsides! Exploring on foot certainly gives you a good workout, but there are plenty of other ways to get around, including trams, cable cars, water taxis and electric bikes.
So whether you're an enthusiastic explorer or prefer a more leisurely approach, there's something for everyone.
Sunset, music and a glass of something lovely
One of my favourite experiences was watching the sun go down over the Douro.
Each evening, people gather on the hillside near the old monastery on the Gaia side, where local musicians provide the soundtrack while visitors enjoy a drink from one of the nearby vendors.
It's a wonderfully atmospheric way to end the day, watching the changing colours of the sky over Porto's rooftops and river.
It's these little experiences that make a city break memorable – and they're even better when shared with good friends!
Finding the right hotel for a girls' weekend
For our trip, accommodation was just as important as the destination itself.
Rather than booking separate hotel rooms, we opted for a three-bedroom suite at The Rebello, which worked brilliantly for our group.
We had:
Three spacious ensuite bedrooms, giving everyone their own privacy.
A kitchen and comfortable lounge area.
Two large, furnished balconies.
Plenty of communal space for getting together, chatting and enjoying a drink before heading out.
It gave us the best of both worlds: our own bedrooms when we wanted some downtime, but lovely shared spaces where we could spend time together.
Although the hotel was on the Gaia side of the river, getting into Porto was really easy. We could simply walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge or hop on a water taxi from close to the hotel.
For a group of friends travelling together, I thought it was a brilliant choice.
Is Porto worth visiting for a weekend?
Absolutely!
Porto has a wonderful combination of history, culture, food, wine, scenery and atmosphere. It's compact enough to explore over a long weekend, but there's enough to keep you busy for longer if you fancy extending your stay.
Whether you're planning a girls' weekend, a birthday celebration, a special anniversary or simply an excuse to get your favourite people together, it's a destination I'd happily recommend.
And of course, the best thing about our annual trips is that it's not really about where we go – it's about making time for friendships that have lasted decades.
